Martin recently delivered a week of Urenco workshops in Ellesmere Port without leaving his home, all done remotely. Here is a class from St Mary of the Angels.

Secondary Students from the Somalian Community Parents Association in Leicester provided remote practical activities and a presentation for local families.

The ASE Teachmeet was held virtually this year. Sarah Eames, a teacher from Leicester teacher, tweeted “Wow! Sarah from Sphere Science is balancing Bird shapes but which one?”

Lights and magnets
Y5 pupils at Cheddington school enjoyed one of our remote workshops which was joined by Jenny from the University of Leicester. The pupils carried out magnetic investigations and light experiments linked to Jenny’s research into the magnetopause and had a chance to ask Jenny any questions.

Safely practical
Y5 pupils at Kew Prep School enjoyed an exciting day of practical workshops delivered by Martin who adhered to CLEAPSS safety advice. Hand-washing, social distancing and a face shield did not detract from the experience at all and a great time was had by all.
Remote Practicals
Cheddington School Y6 enjoyed an amazing workshop, learning about magnetism and the fantastic scientific research into solar wind all via video conferencing.
Safe Science
We delivered a Covid-safe Inset day in Rotherham last week. An exciting way to start the term, allowing teachers to learn some simple practical investigations.

Nature up close and personal
The BSA’s ‘Nature up close and personal’ project will run for a duration of six weeks from 14 July 2020 until 25 August 2020. Participants can sign up at any point over the six-week period, then participate in their nature-based activities across a week. More details here.
Flower Power
Cut flowers needs water to stay alive but ever wondered where that water goes? Take a light-coloured flower and put it in coloured water - see how the petals change. You could even try splitting the stem and putting it into two different colours - see the picture.

Lovely Layers
How many layers can you make? Each layer is a salt solution with a different concentration with food colouring added. The trick is to add them (in order, most concentrated first) very slowly down the side of the container.

Interesting indicator
The liquid from a red cabbage will change colour when put into an acid, an alkali or a neutral substance. Just try it with lemon juice, bicarbonate of sodas and water to see the colours. Then try it with other household substances and find out what they are.

Robust Rafts
How many marbles can a paper raft hold? This raft was made from just one piece of A5 paper, the folded-up corners held together by paper clips. Look how carefully the marbles are being added.

Balancing birds
Can you make a bird balance? Cut out the template (free on our Community Outreach page) and use paper clips (or other weights) to make it balance on your finger.
